Kenya, which manufactures black tea as opposed to green tea made trough the orthodox method, is the world’s third largest producer and leading exporter of black tea. The main growing districts are situated in or around the highland areas on either side of the Great Rift Valley at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 2,700 meters above sea level.
Tea was discovered more than 5000 years ago by emperor Shen Nung of China.
Tea was first introduced in Kenya in 1903 by GWL Caine and was planted in present day Limuru. Since then, Kenya can boast itself as a major producer of black tea.
Kenya is one of the world's top producers and exporters of tea, currently it is ranked third behind China and India.
